Sci pop now has a founding paper. Sci pop: science as aesthetic, theme and method in contemporary popular music, by Dr WELI, is deposited open access on Zenodo under a Creative Commons licence, with a DOI so it can be cited. Anyone can read it, quote it, and build on it.
What it does
The paper fixes a term. It proposes sci pop as a name for contemporary pop songs that carry science as aesthetic, theme or method, and defines it as a framework any artist can use. Its organising idea is a single range: actual research at one end, the fictional cultural imaginary of science at the other, and everything a song can be between them.
It positions sci pop as entertainment pop that carries science, in the way science fiction is entertainment cinema, and sets it apart from nature-themed songs and from music made to teach. It also names two roles the field has not yet consolidated: the scientist-musician who works from their own research, and the musical science consultant who advises a song for accuracy. The argument is illustrated through Dr WELI's own practice as WELI.

Open, not gatekept
This is a public founding statement, not a journal article, and it has not been peer reviewed. It sits on Zenodo so it is free, permanent and citable, and open from the day it went up. The point is to put the idea where artists, researchers and writers can use it, rather than hold it behind a paywall. It is the same reason the plain-language version lives openly on the site.
